In the recovery from substance abuse process, lack of job training and employment is probably the single largest factor for failure. It is difficult enough to become sober and then the challenges of reintegration into mainstream society create further barriers to long term recovery. Veterans, suffering from addiction many times compounded with other issues, such as criminal record, no employment history and no marketable skills surface and they have a difficult time becoming employed.

With bleak employment prospects, regression to previous addictive behavior is prevalent. When a participant in the Victory Village program, our transitional living and substance abuse treatment program has progressed sufficiently in their recovery, the opportunity for vocational training and “on the job” work experience in the construction trades doing home repairs, deconstruction, material salvage and reuse will be made available to them. We will remodel houses, deconstruct substandard houses, re-use materials, and recycle construction materials at the Kaufman Brothers Vintage Merchandise store in Corning, CA. The Kaufman Brothers Vintage Merchandise store is 17,200 SF to which can be rebuilt the historic corrugated metal repair shops of an additional 8,900 SF.This will create an estimated 19 jobs.

It does not appear that improvement in the new home construction trades will happen any time soon. In these cases, people opt to repair their existing homes rather than purchase a new home. Jobs in the home repair trades may be the only bright spot in the construction trades. Job training in home repairs should turn into employment opportunities. Materials from home repairs and remodeling will be salvaged and reused. Our vintage merchandise store in Corning will be the outlet for these goods. In the case of a substandard home we will de-construct the house rather than use the wrecking ball. We will salvage serviceable materials such as plumbing fixures, electrical lights, mouldings, windows and vintage fixtures for reuse. Recycling all materials possible has the obvious benefit of reducing waste and landfill space. Recycling is a major factor in sustainability and wise use of our resources. We will seek out and advertise for demolition jobs. Private home donations, county code enforcement agencies, etc.

      · We are improving housing and eliminating dangerous buildings.

· We are training our clients in home repair trades skills and creating jobs.

· We are recycling salvaged materials for environmental benefit.

· We are reselling materials at our store in Corning producing income for the program.
